Tien & Seymour: A Lifelong Relationship

We first met Tien in 2017 during our Flying Eye Hospital project in Can Tho, Vietnam. On screening at day the local hospital, Tien was selected as a teaching case so local eye doctors could learn new techniques to treat strabismus, a condition that caused Tien’s eyes to look in different directions and made it hard for her to see. This is also when Tien first met Seymour!

With local eye doctors watching closely, Canadian ophthalmologist and Volunteer Faculty member, Dr. Asim Ali, expertly performed the delicate surgery Tien needed. And guess who was there to comfort her? Who else but Seymour!

Dr. Asim Ali, who performed Tien's surgery, is a longtime Orbis Volunteer Faculty member and Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at The Hospital for Sick Children's Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences in Toronto, ON.

Six years later, when the plane returned to Vietnam in 2023, Tien (and Seymour) came for a follow-up exam. Now 14 years old, Tien is thriving. She’s excelling in school and loves playing sports. And Seymour? He’ll always hold a special place in Tien’s heart!

Tien made sure to bring Seymour along when she and her father came to visit us during our recent Flying Eye Hospital project in Vietnam.

Seymour has been there to comfort thousands of children who could have lost their vision forever if not for the sight-saving treatment they received thanks to Orbis and our supporters – people just like you.

With your support – and Seymour’s cuddles – we can help change the lives of so many more children like Tien who urgently need eye care. Can we count on your donation?
