U of M Medical Students Raise Money for Orbis Flying Eye Hospital

Four students from the Max Rady College of Medicine’s Ophthalmology Interest Group - Fatima Saqib, Chris Stockl, Asim Ibrahim, and Maya Polevoi - recently organized a successful bake sale fundraiser to support Orbis, a nonprofit dedicated to ending avoidable blindness worldwide.

Orbis is best known for its Flying Eye Hospital - a fully equipped teaching hospital on board an airplane that travels the globe, training local eye care teams. Through hands-on instruction, telemedicine (via its Cybersight platform), and hospital-based training, Orbis provides critical skills and resources to improve eye care in low-resource settings.

The students were inspired by this mission and together, they brought in an impressive spread of baked goods, attracting classmates, faculty, and staff throughout the day.

By the end of the sale, they raised over $450 CAD, all of which will go directly to Orbis programs that provide vision-saving care and education across the globe.

This event showcased more than just great baking - it was a reflection of student leadership, global awareness, and compassion in action. The Ophthalmology Interest Group plans to continue fundraising and advocacy efforts next year to support equitable eye care worldwide.

With this initiative, these future physicians proved that meaningful change can start small - and make a big difference!
