This prestigious recognition celebrates the power of partnership and innovation in driving progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Operation Sight stood out for its transformative impact in tackling one of the world’s leading causes of avoidable blindness—trachoma—across Ethiopia.

Ethiopia carries the highest burden of trachoma globally. Repeat infections can lead to trachomatous trichiasis (TT)—a painful condition where eyelashes turn inward and scratch the eye, causing irreversible blindness if left untreated.

Launched in 2021 with the support of the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, Operation Sight set out to eliminate the backlog of TT cases across Amhara, Oromia, Central Ethiopia, South Ethiopia, and Sidama regions.

Operation Sight uses a contactless and hardwareless solution to capture a patient’s facial biometrics.

A First-of-Its-Kind Biometric Solution

The project uses cutting-edge biometric technology from our partner, Simprints. Their facial recognition and fingerprint scanning technology ensures that every patient is registered accurately, every surgery is recorded, and every person receives proper follow-up care—streamlining eye health services on a remarkable scale and removing the risk of human error, such as duplicate records or misidentification.

Since its launch, Operation Sight has:

  • Biometrically enrolled 43,000 patients
  • Created digital records for 40,000+ TT surgeries
  • Enabled 57,000 follow-up visits
  • Trained 340 Integrated Eye Care Workers

By cutting the average time to search for patient records from nearly four minutes to just 24 seconds, the technology allows health workers to focus on what matters most—restoring sight.

Operation Sight can now track surgeries, follow-ups, and outcomes in real time.

This award affirms what collaboration and innovation can achieve. Together, Orbis, Simprints, and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health are showing the world how technology can unlock new pathways to improved care—and help bring us closer to a future free from avoidable blindness.
