HATCH: Making Positive Change through Plane Pull for Sight

Sporting their bright orange t-shirts, big smiles, and infectious enthusiasm, the team from Hatch have been a mainstay at our Plane Pull for Sight events in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver for the past three years.

Hatch first joined the Plane Pull ranks in 2017 with a team in Vancouver, raising more than $4,200 in support of Orbis Canada. Word – and interest to participate – spread quickly throughout the company about this fun, family-friendly event that challenges your team to pull a 65-tonne FedEx 757 cargo plane across the tarmac in the fastest time. In 2018, Hatch added a team in Calgary to complement their Vancouver contingent, completing the western Canada sweep. Together, the two teams raised nearly $6,300, placing them among our top fundraising teams for that year.

A global multidisciplinary management, engineering and development consultancy headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, Hatch employs over 9,000 professionals in 70+ offices on six continents. With more than one hundred years of corporate history, their experience spans over 150 countries around the world in the metals, energy, infrastructure, digital, and investments market sectors. As an organization, Hatch is “…passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change”, a sentiment that’s clearly evident in their support of Orbis and our sight-saving work around the world.

In 2019, Hatch made Plane Pull for Sight history by becoming the first company to have a team in each event city in the same year when they rallied their HQ staff to join 32 other energetic teams on the tarmac in Toronto on Sunday, June 9.

With three teams fundraising and pulling hard for Orbis, Hatch raised an incredible $9,101 – an amount that was matched corporately, bringing the team’s three-city fundraising total to more than $18,200. This amazing accomplishment placed the team squarely atop the overall Plane Pull for Sight fundraising standings in 2019.

CEO, Orbis Canada

We were so excited when we heard that Hatch was entering a team in Toronto as well this year. They’ve been a big supporter of Plane Pull for Sight the last three years. To see them grow from one team, then two, now three – and then add in the matching corporate donation this year as well – it’s a real testament to the culture of their organization.

Since first stepping foot on the tarmac in Vancouver three years ago, the caring, dedicated and committed individuals from Hatch have raised more than $28,700 in support of Orbis Canada. With a team in every Plane Pull for Sight city and full corporate support, we can’t wait to see what the team from Hatch will do next!

To the three team captains – Susan McGeachie in Toronto, Emily Gervais in Calgary, and Harvie Buitelaar in Vancouver – and to everyone else at Hatch who participated, donated and cheered them on, we say thank you! You truly are making a ‘positive change’ in the lives of thousands of people suffering from blindness and visual impairment around the world.
