New eLearning course launched in modern cataract surgery

We’re delighted to announce that a new e-learning course in Phacoemulsification - recognized as the gold-standard in cataract surgery – has been rolled out across our award-winning telemedicine platform, Cybersight.

The online course covers theoretical knowledge and basic skill development behind the cutting-edge treatment of cataracts in adults.

Broken down into three modules course participants are trained in evaluating adult cataract and pre-operative assessment, phacoemulsification surgery, and post-operative care of the patient.

Phacoemulsification is a technique of cataract extraction, utilizing high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations to fragment the lens combined with controlled irrigation to maintain normal pressure in the anterior chamber, and suction to remove lens fragments and irrigating fluid.

The new course takes a blended learning approach to ophthalmic teaching as it combines both hands-on and online training to boost learning outcomes.

Ophthalmology residents-in-training, junior ophthalmologists in practice and senior physicians converting to the Phacoemulsification technique, as well as our partner hospitals in 18 countries, are set to benefit from the course.

For more than 30 years, the cornerstone of our work has been to teach and train eye health professionals to prevent and treat avoidable blindness

The Fundamentals of Phacoemulsification’ combines narrative, medical art and images, demonstration and surgical videos to optimize the learning experience.

It also includes downloadable articles, guidelines and practice manuals for reference and educational materials. Participants take 10-13 question pre- and post-module quizzes to track their progress and knowledge development.

In-person trainings are delivered through the Flying Eye Hospital or in local hospitals and assessed by our Volunteer Faculty using the internationally recognized competency assessments from the International Council of Ophthalmology.

Cybersight Impact

For more than 30 years, the cornerstone of our work has been to teach and train eye health professionals to prevent and treat avoidable blindness.

The addition of the eLearning course is yet another brilliant example of how expert volunteers can teach and support eye care teams using the latest advancements in internet and mobile technologies to fight blindness.

We’d like to say a big thank you to our longstanding partner, The Alcon Foundation. Without their support, the creation and development of the training course wouldn’t have been possible.

And thanks to our supporters and partners we're always on the lookout for new ways to use technology to help build the skills of eye teams in communities around the world. By constantly innovating we're able to reach more people - more efficiently - than ever before.

New courses are set to be launched in 2019, with ‘Fundamentals in Glaucoma’, ‘Fundamentals in Diabetic Retinopathy’ and ‘Fundamentals in Retinopathy of Prematurity’ for 2019.
